As great as Amsterdam is, it is not a city known for its fabulous breakfast culture. Many cafes open late, or only offer limited breakfast options. In recent years, many great places to have breakfast in Amsterdam have opened up. Coffee chains like Coffee Company and Bagels and Beans are easy to find and will do in a pinch. A bit more exciting are Bakery cafes that offer all the delicious foodstuff you’d expect from a bakery along with fresh coffee, tea and other breakfast options. Here is my top 5 favourite breakfast places.

Het Bakhuys
Have an amazing (!) coffee while you see the bread being made before your very eyes. Delicious bread, croissants and pastries. Have your breakfast to go, or sit down in their cantina style café. Opens at 7AM

De Ysbreeker

Watch the boats go by on the Amstelriver while you have a lovely breakfast in one of the oldest cafes in Amsterdam ( The Ysbreeker has been around  since 1702). From the ultra Dutch ‘Boterham met hagelslag’ ( bread with chocolate sprinkles) to eggs benedict or a bowl of porridge, the Ysbreeker offers a wide range of breakfast choices. Opens at 8AM

Greenwoods

This cosy little ‘tea shop’ serves wonderful a English breakfast, delicious homemade soda bread and lovely sandwiches. It’s small, so it fills up quickly on weekend mornings.

Omelegg

Situated in the trendy Pijp, near Museumplein, this place is one of a kind. They specialize in omelettes, but their other food is great too. Friendly staff, and speedy service. Be wanred: Omelegg gets very busy and does not take reservations. Opens at 7AM

Gebroeders Niemeijer

This beautiful French Bakery and café seems bit out of place on the somewhat seedy part of the Nieuwedijk. Surrounded by tourist shops, seed shops and casino’s, it is a gem of place to have breakfast (or lunch). The bread and pastries are excellent, the café cosy and the coffee is great. Opens at 8.15AM
